WHY?
Cardiovascular disease, also called heart disease, is the #1 cause of death world-wide. Cardiovascular disease can affect anyone, men and women of all ages and races. More than half of all heart attacks occur in people with no previous history of heart disease and of those initial heart attacks, nearly one-third are fatal. The risk of cardiovascular events can be dramatically reduced with appropriate medicines and care, if you know you are at risk you can seek proper treatment.
WHAT IS A CALCIUM SCORE (HEART SCAN)?
A heart scan, also called a coronary calcium scan, uses a special CT test to provide pictures of the patient’s heart for their doctor to detect and measure calcium-containing plaque in the coronary (heart) arteries. This calcification is measured and given a score. When this score is combined with other health information, your doctor can use the score to develop a treatment plan for reducing your risk for heart disease.
