Professional Diagnostic & Treatment Methods for a Healthier Heart

Patients with suspected heart problems can undergo various tests to determine the specifics of their condition. Once a diagnosis has been reached, we can develop and implement an appropriate treatment plan.

EKG Test

The EKG is a test that records electrical signals from your heart onto a paper strip. The pattern of these signals can inform the doctor of whether your heart is normal, under stress, or straining to perform.

The process of an EKG test is as follows:

  • You will be asked to remove your clothing from the waist up, put on a gown, and lie down on your back
  • Electrodes (small pads) are placed on your chest, shoulders, and legs
  • The electrodes record your heart rhythm and any change in your heart’s signals that occur during the test
  • After about 10 minutes of recording, the healthcare provider will remove the electrodes

Echo

Echocardiography is a test that records images of your heart before and after exercise. By comparing the images, your doctor can tell whether your heart is getting enough blood to meet its increased demand for oxygen.

The first portion of the test is a resting echocardiogram. A transducer coated with cool gel is moved firmly over your chest, creating sound waves that create images of your heart. At times you may be asked to inhale or exhale and hold your breath for a few seconds, as air in your lungs can affect the images. An IV may be started in your arm if a specific type of study image is needed.

Stress Testing

An exercise stress test shows your heart’s response to exercise. The test records your heartbeat while you walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike.

During your test, you will walk on the treadmill for several minutes as the intensity of the exercise increases. Electrodes and a blood pressure cuff will monitor your heartbeat and blood pressure during and after the test.

Throughout the test, be sure to tell the healthcare provider if you feel any of the following:

  • Chest, arm, or jaw discomfort
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Leg cramps or soreness
