Lymphedema Treatment
What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a build up of lymph fluid that does not get drained through the lymphatic system, causing chronic swelling. This can occur in the legs, arms, face, neck, abdomen, and genitals.
Signs & Symptoms
- - Decreased mobility in the joints
- - Tightness of the skin
- - Swelling of a portion of the body
- - A feeling of fullness/heaviness
- - Clothes and jewelry feeling tighter/restrictive
Course of Treatment: Decongestive Therapy
Decongestive therapy, often referred to as Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), is a comprehensive and systematic approach used to manage lymphedema. The goal is to reduce limb volume, improve lymphatic drainage, and manage symptoms effectively. The areas of focus during treatment are the following:
- - Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): Specialized massage to stimulate lymph flow.
- - Compression Therapy: Multi-layered bandaging or compression garments to reduce swelling.
- - Skin Care: Maintain healthy skin to prevent infections.
- - Exercise Therapy: Specific exercises to promote lymphatic drainage and limb mobility.
- - Education: Learn about lifestyle changes, proper garment use, and skin care.
