Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
What is HBOT?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, promoting faster healing and fighting infection. The pressurized environment allows your lungs to gather more oxygen than when breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure
What conditions are treated with HBOT?
HBOT is used to treat a variety of medical conditions including the following:
- Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: HBOT helps remove carbon monoxide from the blood more quickly.
- Non-Healing Wounds: Including diabetic foot ulcers or wounds that have an underlying infection referred to as osteomyelitis
- Radiation Injuries: Tissue damage caused by radiation therapy
- Severe Infections: Including gas gangrene and necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Crush Injuries: Trauma that results in blocked blood flow
- Skin Grafts and Flaps: Assisting in the healing of compromised grafts and flaps
Frequently Asked Questions about HBOT
How does HBOT work?
HBOT works by increasing the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. The elevated oxygen levels help oxygenate tissues that are not getting enough oxygen, encourage the growth of new blood vessels, and help the body eliminate certain kinds of bacteria
What can I expect during an HBOT session?
During an HBOT session, you will lie in a pressurized chamber and breathe 100% oxygen. Sessions typically last between one to two hours. You may feel a slight pressure in your ears, like what you might experience during an airplane ascent or descent.
Can Someone Stay with Me During Therapy?
To ensure the privacy of all our patients, family members are not allowed to stay with you during your treatment. However, we provide a comfortable waiting room for their convenience. A trained technician will always be present in the treatment room and can communicate with you at any time.
Are there any side effects?
HBOT is generally safe, but some patients may experience mild side effects such as ear pressure, sinus congestion, or temporary vision changes. Your healthcare provider will discuss any potential risks with you before starting treatment.
Is HBOT covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover HBOT for approved conditions. It's best to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage for your specific condition
Is HBO therapy dangerous?
No, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is very safe. Our expert wound staff follow strict protocols to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the treatment. Before your first session, you will receive a comprehensive orientation to help you understand the process and what to expect.
